From fourteen to forty
At the foundation of Duende in 1984, two disciplines were represented: painting and sculpture. Gradually more disciplines are added by a new influx of artists, while the work of the seated artists develops. Presently, practically all artistic disciplines are represented: painting, sculpture, photography, installations, computer-design, video, film, design, architecture and theory.
Also, space is offered to small businesses in a related profession: stage-building and design for film, television and theater, JaJo-articles to make daily life pleasant and the Urban Espresso Bar (a cafe with an exposition room in the centre of Rotterdam) does their baking here.
In the beginning there were fourteen artists in a former education building in the west of Rotterdam. Presently, about forty artists work in the new Tamboerstraat location, due to the increase of artists and a fusion with Casco, the artists’ community accomodated in the same building.
